SOX

A task planner where the limits live in the database

SOX is our own product. It is a task planner for teams, and an example of the multi-user web apps we build for clients.

01

The Challenge

A planner has to hold many views of the same tasks and keep them correct for several people at once. It also has a free tier and a paid tier. If the paid limits only exist in the interface, anyone can skip them. We built SOX so the rules hold even when someone calls the database directly.

02

The Approach

Every table has row level security, and the free and paid limits are checked by the database itself, not only by the buttons on screen. Plan data such as who has Premium is kept in a table users can read but not change. Dependencies are checked for loops, and the critical path is calculated from them. Task notes are stored as limited rich text, so no HTML can be injected. We built the app in two stages: the core board first, then the advanced planning features. About 680 unit tests cover the calculations, and database tests run against a real database inside transactions that roll back.
